Indispensable accessories for winter, tights come in wide varieties to warm up and emphasize the legs. How d you do you choose them well and keep them as long as possible? All the tips to follow!
Hot in front! Choosing the right tights to pair with your winter dress or skirt isn’t always easy. Here are the steps not to be missed.
What color of tights do you prefer?
For Cristina Cordula, nude tights are the absolute fault of taste. At the My Dear Fashion, we are far from being so categorical. Kate Middleton never leaves her family, for example. It’s even one of the dress rules of the Crown: she must not show bare legs and therefore has a vast collection of tights that match her complexion! For years, black tights were the only thing to have. Light, semi-opaque, or downright very dark veils are available in all shades as soon as the cold season arrives. Until 2022, TikTok decides otherwise.
On the Chinese social network, videos extolling the merits of semi-opaque brown tights (30 deniers) are multiplying. Closer to the skin color, they would contrast less with the clothes in the eyes of Internet users. Among the brands acclaimed by consumers are Calzedonia, Le Bourget, and Wolford. More original and equally stylish alternatives are colored opaque tights and fancy patterned tights. Red, purple, turquoise, yellow, white… Pop shades to combine thoughtfully with your clothes to avoid becoming a colorful parrot.
What size tights should I choose?
To find your tights size, height, and weight is enough! It is indeed the ratio between these two measurements that will allow you to find the ideal pair. Andréa Baile, collections manager for the specialized brand Le Bourget, explains: “On the packs, there is a size chart, which is made up of numbers from size 1 to size seven or even 8, for certain tights. Size 1 corresponds to small silhouettes, and size 2 or 3 is for women of average stature. Size 4 is recommended for tall women or round morphologies.” Be careful not to choose tights that are too big, which would slip or roll on the waist, or too small, which would tend to slip off more quickly.
How to determine the mesh?
The thickness of a tight is measured in denier; brands use it as an indicator of opacity:
- 10 to 15 denier: these are thin, transparent tights, almost invisible on the leg, more used for spring, and often in shades close to their skin tone
- 20 denier: transparent tights that can be worn all year round for the less chilly
- 30 to 40 denier: semi-opaque tights that can be worn with everything, all year round, whether plain or fancy. “It’s the trend of the moment!” Says Andréa Baile
- 50 denier: corresponds to opaque tights; it is the warmest denier and, therefore, the most widespread for an autumn-winter season, often plain black, colored, or with patterns.
The higher the denier, the tighter the mesh and the more robust the tights. According to the expert, it is essential to have black 50 denier tights and a fancy 30 denier pair in your closet.
How to put on your tights without spinning them?
Some tips are good to know so as not to spin your tights when putting them on. The first thing that should not be overlooked, of course, is the condition of the nails. They must be filed to perfection at the feet level so as not to create a hole at the toe level during the day. But also on the side of the hands to avoid snagging when threading.
The same attention to take for your jewelry. Remove rings and bracelets before putting on tights; it’s safer! Less conventional advice from Andréa Baile: “Do not put cream on the legs beforehand or put your cream on a few minutes before. The skin must have had time to absorb it.”
To make your legs beautiful without risk, take the time to do the right thing. We start from the tiptoes and slowly unroll the tights on the leg. Preferably, put the socks on before putting on your dress or skirt.
How to wash and store your tights?
Tights shouldn’t be considered fragile clothing. Washing them by hand remains ideal for keeping a quality mesh, but putting them in the washing machine is possible. A gentle wash at 30°C should be favored to preserve them as long as possible. The Le Bourget expert advises opting for a mesh laundry bag, but a pillowcase will do the trick if you don’t have one.
For drying, we prefer natural! No twists, clothes dryer, or direct contact with the radiator… A classic drying rack will be perfect. Once dry, roll them up and put them away in a drawer. A pouch can also help protect the mesh and help with transportation.
How to repair tights?
” Stop the knit with transparent nail polish,” advises Andréa Baile if, however, and despite your precautions, your tights are spun. Other tips are also popular with consumers. Among these, spray hairspray to tighten damaged fibers, apply egg white for models in natural fibers, or use a thread and a needle. Dream legs are yours!
